Smart City-Healthy Aundh Neighborhood Development Project

Saturday, 27 April 2019

The Aundh mall below the tree canopy comprises of certain elements that not only makes it smart but also one of its kind in Pune. These elements are simple yet effective in solving most of the citizen’s issues and achieve a design that is suitable to the context. The streets enable people to walk with baggage, shopping trolleys throughout the neighborhood and thus, lead to reduction of use of vehicles for short trips. The complete network also enables universal accessibility as per the Act. The neighborhood has become one of its kind where citizens are able to walk & cycle safely, thus creating a healthy and green environment, setting an example for other neighborhoods.

This open mall not only saves energy but also has helped in reducing motorized trips in the neighborhood, as walking and cycling for communities has increased leading to a GREEN and HYGIENIC ENVIRONMENT

Pedestrian Walkway Illumination: Street Elements throughout PDA projects

Friday, 24th July 2020

Lighting is one of the most important aspect of streets, when it comes to safety. The street has been planned with ample lighting that provides adequate illumination to enhance street usability and safety. Green Colour Uplighters have been installed on trees to add an ambience to the street. Soft areas are provided at the corners so that signages could be easily fixed. It is best to place streetlights along both sides of arterial streets and provide a consistent level of lighting along a roadway. This includes lighting pedestrian crosswalks and approaches to the crosswalks. Appropriate quality and placement of lighting can enhance an environment and increase comfort and safety.

Tree Gratings: Street Elements throughout PDA projects

Friday, 17th July 2020

Tree gratings allow space for the tree while providing pedestrian traffic flow over the tree planting area. Tree grating also help prevent litter build-up from entering the tree planting area and suppress weed growth. Medium size trees treated with the tree gratings not only conserve trees but also increase the effective area of public walkway, by allowing people to walk on the grating. Tree gratings provided at the base to ensure that the trees survive. They allow tree roots to absorb air, sunlight, and water, meanwhile its soil is protected from pedestrian traffic impact. It creates a protective barrier, providing uncompacted soil and development space for tree roots. They also serve as a decorative element along streets with various design styles.

Sculptures as Street Art : Street Elements throughout PDA projects

Friday, 11th July 2020

Sculptures convey the message of 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, prepared by various artists under Pune Biennale Foundation that further add to the ambience of the street. Placement of the sculptures is thoughtfully planned by considering adjacent land use and activities. For example: ‘The Robot’ an amazingly detailed sculpture fixed in front of a photo booth that currently serves as a selfie point of the area; ‘The Cart’ showing a man pulling a cart fixed in front of Bank portraying that banks support all classes of people in the society; A Stabilized Motion Sculpture of Mother and Child has been fixed in front of Accessory shop for children. The Street has been designed considering safety for all age groups varying from 8 to 80. Design elements such as floor mounted games and sculptures have been planned according to the adjacent street activity or commercial activity which contributes to the liveability of the street, for example: snake and ladder developed in front of the toy shop. The compound wall rebuilt for the residential complexes would be narrating stories of the street design process and characteristics of the streets with the help of caricatures, paintings and murals. This would make the walls interesting and at the same time an interactive edge would be created making the street more lively.

Stone seating’s: Street elements through PDA projects

Friday, 3rd July 2020

It is important to have ample amount of Earth around the large trees to let them breathe. Hence rectangular stone seating spaces have been proposed to form spaces similar to ‘Kattas’ ( informal seating space in Marathi ) around the tree. The uneven texture of the black stone is perfect for sitting purpose only. The side facing the road has been chamfered to prevent people sitting on that particular side. Most of the shopkeepers who were previously hesitant for this new seating have recognised the importance and use of this space. Their customers enjoy sitting adjacent to the shops and on the contrary, the shopkeepers whose frontages did not have the ‘kattas’ demanded one of their own. Thus, today we really appreciate and need a space to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of surrounding in busy life.

Turning buffer(Kaan), Dustbins and Signages : Street elements throughout PDA projects

Friday, 26th June 2020

Turning buffer (kaan) is used as a street design element to define the property entry- exits as well as the parking bays. It helps streamline the parking and keeps the property entrance free of idle parking. These soft areas are also used for installation of dustbins and signages as well as property identification boards.
Dustbins are provided at an interval of 50 m on both sides. The type of waste to be disposed of is segregated into two types, biodegradable and non-biodegradable and hence dustbins are colour coded with green and blue respectively.

All the required signages have been planned and executed as per the I.R.C guidelines that make the street user-friendly and well-functioning.

Concrete Bollards : Street Elements throughout PDA projects

Friday, 19th June 2020

Concrete precast bollards have been provided at every entry-exits and pedestrian crossings to prevent vehicular movement on footpaths, enabling unhindered flow of pedestrians. Wheel chair access has been taken care of by providing a clear distance for a wheelchair to pass at each location. Concrete bollards are provided instead of the regular steel bollards as they are cost effective and solve the theft issue. Tile chips have been used at the base of bollards in order to achieve a perfect finish.

Median executed at DP Road (A mall under the tree canopy), Aundh, Pune

Friday, 12th June 2020

These are few pictures of the median at DP road where the flowers are blooming. The concrete medians that are seen in Pune create a number of issues where people attempt to cross to the other side by jumping over the median or railings. The drivers tend to drive 1 foot away from the median as psychological effect that leaves a shy-away space. To eliminate this wastage of space and to ease the flow of vehicles, a green median has been proposed and executed with a central chain link. A mesh is fixed, on which the plantation is made to be growen. The shrubs eventually grips on it and forms a wonderful edge making the road look more vibrant.

"Aundh Mall under the Tree Canopy"

Friday, 24th August 2018

The uniform vocabulary of the street with all the elements bring about a particular character, which creates a nostalgia. These elements make the street one of its kind. The calmness is a product of all the features that blend perfectly with the character. Morning scene is a perfect Gate - away from the daily hub dub of the city. One can experience this place with its uniqueness, as if quite words of poetry are being whispered in the ears.

The serenity which is evident from the pictures is transformed into a spurring symphony with people of different ages, professions, backgrounds crowding the "Mall under the Tree Canopy" by evening. The quietnes in the morning is perfectly juxtaposed with the liveliness of the street in the later hours of the day.

Trees are like our grand parents.

They are always standing for us in every situation. They always have something for everyone,

In return we can at least give them the little space they deserve.

We gave the trees their own space and look what we got.

The trees have transformed the street ambiance, and people seem to be enjoying it.

Master Plan of urban street- No increase in road width and cutting of trees.

Friday, 13th March 2020

This article Ar. Prasanna Desai talks about how to design a master plan of urban streets which would help pedestrians to walk safe as well as drivers not to create congestion. He talked about this through his project of Aundh Smart street ,Pune. It is the first urban street in Pune. He has neither increased the width of road nor has cut any of the trees. He said that "Cutting one tree and replanting ten more makes no point." To avoid congestion it is not fesible to increase the road width and cut trees. He belives in saving all the trees and give pedestrians and cyclists first priority.

Aundh Residents, Shopkeepers Excited about Smart City Dry Run

8th October 2016,Saturday

PUNE, TIMES CITY, PAGE - 4

The excitement among residents and shopkeepers over the Smart City mock drill was palpable on friday, a day before the event starts. The road test will take place between October 8 and 15.

Doubts and questions aside, the locals are looking forward to the experimental road redesign in their area which promises to provide dedicated space for pedestrians and cyclists, besides allocating designated spots for hawkers and car parking. The design, worked out by a city-based architecture firm in association with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the traffic police is a combination of multiple elements that seek to decongest public spaces and to create an environment for better community living and individual quality of life.

Frustrated with the increasing traffic in the area, residents are hopeful of a weeklong respite from daily struggles of haphazard parking, lack of pedestrian safety and a better quality of community engagement. All, however, are unanimous in the opinion that sound implementation of the concept will be key to its success.

SHUTTLES TO REDUCE CARS, BIKES IN AUNDH

Monday, 04th October 2016

PUNE, TIMES CITY, PAGE - 2

Elaborating on the reasons for introducing the shuttle service, city-based architect and town planner Prasanna Desai said, “A lot of people, including housewives, children and the elderly, are forced to remain confined to their homes only because they don’t have a vehicle. There are many others who fear the parking hassles they would face if they drive out in a car to a destination not too far off. This shuttle would be of great use to all of them.Since it is open, clean and will operate at a frequency of every few minutes, we expect it to be the oxygen of the entire experiment as it will reduce the number of private vehicles. We hope the civic body can consider continuing the service even after the experiment.”

Area resident Vaishali Patkar is already confident of its success. “I take autos or taxis even for my local chores and this shuttle will definitely be convenient for me as it promises last mile connectivity all around Aundh. However, I should know the timings of the service well in advance so that I can utilize it well,” she said.

Municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar expresses hope for the system to be replicated all over the city in a phased manner. “What we are trying out is a futuristic model of urban transport. The idea is to get people to walk and cycle, and not think of driving their cars everywhere. However, this is only an experiment, which we will monitor very closely to identify the pros and cons. Successful elements can be tried out in other parts of the city. However, we are not looking at any immediate results,”he said.

DRY RUN OF SMART CITY PLAN FROM OCT 08

Saturday, 2nd October 2016

PUNE, TIMES CITY, PAGE - 5

The proposal has been worked out to the last detail by a city-based town planning firm in partnership with the Pune Municipal Corporation, traffic police and local activists. The idea has also been explained to the area residents and shopkeepers’ associations, and their approval sought to make this work.

After marathon meetings on the issue on Saturday, additional municipal commissioner Prerna Deshbhratar expressed confidence regarding its success. “To make a world-class city, we need to adopt concepts of that level. The redesign is meant to give space to for public by redesigning the space for vehicles. At the inital stage, people naturally have queries and doubts, but the good thing is that everyone is positive about the experiment, and wants to make it work,” she said. Vaishali Patkar, president of the Aundh Vikas Mandal, who has been bringing all stakeholders on board, is very pleased. “I am extremely happy that something like this is happening in the area where I grew up. I hope Pune’s roads become ideals for the whole country. As part of the plan, they will definitely become more people-friendly. Of course, we are still working on getting traffic wardens, road signages, etc to guide people through the plan,” she said.

Excited about the roll-out of the experiment, city-based architect and urban designer (Prasanna Desai Architects PDA) Prasanna Desai — whose firm has designed the experiment — pins its success on a first-ever shuttle service in the area. “Our larger aim is to improve the quality of life for the residents by reducing traffic congestion, noise and air pollution, and by making the streets pedestrian and bicycle-friendly. People should want to ditch their private vehicles and opt for the local shuttle service which will run every five minutes. We are confident that citizens are going to love the conceptof different coloured shuttles taking them to their destinations,” he said.

The traffic police will be closely monitoring the response to the drill, said officials of the department. “This is a congested area of the city. Implementing an experiment of this scale in the area is tricky, but its success could pave the way for it to be replicated all across the city.
